Seed Eater, acrylic/collage, 36 x 24, by Elizabeth Seaver
My friend Aline took this photo in her wonderland of a garden last year. I finally got "a round tuit" and painted this goldfinch on a large, collaged canvas which had been languishing for just the right subject.
The male American Goldfinch in its late spring/summer garb is a tiny splash of sunshine in swooping flight. It is hard to believe there is plumage so yellow in existence. Females, as is often true in the bird world, are much less showy in color, more of an subdued olive green. You can observe goldfinches at backyard feeders in much of the country.
Aline captured a whole series of images, including one which has the little fellow, tail-up, rooting around in the head of the flower for just this seed!

Very Nice. On the closer view, it looks as though the little bird is looking right at me.
The sunlit stems and the yellows of the flower and bird just call you into that blue - great stuff here!! It makes you remember that, yes, there is that yellow in the world even if it's hidden by all the snow right now.

Sunflowers are one of my favorite subjects in paintings and I just love the look on this bird's face. I'll be sure to check it out when I'm back for more than a few seconds. Beautiful work!
ah this is lovely. They look different from english goldfinches.
I started putting out niger seed a few years back, and now have lots of goldfinches visiting, they are so bright and sweet

This just dazzled me. We see these little birds for a brief period in the late spring/summer. They are just passing through, but the sight makes a whole day feel golden. This painting did the same thing for me -- it illuminated the day, and made me feel intensely joyful, absolutely clear that there is beauty and wonder in the world.
